Winzig has studied illustration, design and commercial art at Pace University, NY and fine art, graphic art and web design came later at WCC, SUNY Westchester, NY. Her studies continued privately with local masters concentrating on oil and watercolor techniques and portraiture. “I have had many other instructors and workshops along the way with continuous proliferation as my greatest teacher", says Winzig.
“Painting watercolor flowers in the dead of winter is my surefire way to remember the promise of spring. It’s the carrot on a string held out before the stubborn donkey of cold dark days, leading me back to the light. Watercolor, if I let it, splays out so beautifully and creates its own gradients from dark to light. Overwork or try to force your way with watercolor, you’re done, its ruined. Like with most things of beauty and grace, be gentle, patient and free and you just might get a lovely watercolor."

What is it?
UPSTATE ART WEEKEND (UPAW) is a connective annual event, for residents and tourists alike, celebrating the cultural vibrancy of Upstate New York. The fifth edition of UPAW will take place Thursday, July 18, through Sunday, July 21, 2024, spanning ten counties in the Catskills Mountains and Hudson Valley.
UPAW launched in 2020 with 23 participants, expanding to over 145 this year, welcoming thousands of visitors to the region. The participants are comprised of local arts organizations, galleries, museums, residencies and creative projects, mixed with temporary exhibitions and events staged especially for UPAW.
UPAW compiles a program of events and a comprehensive google map, which garnered 320k+ views for the 2023 edition and continues to be used as a resource to discover the arts Upstate.
UPAW has been featured in The New York Times, artnet news, The Art Newspaper, Hyperallergic, Chronogram, Cool Hunting and Whitewall, among others.

On Saturday, October 21st, 2:00 – 5:00pm, the H-Art Gallery at Steel Imaginations will present an artist’s reception for “ACHE”, an exhibit of 3D interactive art by Peekskill-based artist Maureen Winzig. Meet the artist and interact with your own reactions on paper. Refreshments will be served.

Painting, Poetry & Music

Come see some performance art on the street as artists respond to poetry read aloud. As the poet reads their poem, the artist will paint what they heard in the words. The poet stops, the artists continue while a musician interprets what they see and hear. 2 artists for each poet. 3 poets. Food and drink are available at the Bean Runner Cafe.
I will be responding to poet Paul Stark as he reads about his battle with cancer at around 3pm.
To Have and Hold

I'm so pleased to present my newest watercolor series. It's a set of nine small works that touch an intimate part of the heart ~ touch. This pandemic world has made it hard to have your loved ones near and hold them close. I paint what I dream and I dream of a world where people embrace with abandon!
One third of all sales will go to feeding Ukrainians in need.
